Grammar: Complex Sentences. Subject and Predicative Clauses

A complex sentence consists of a principal clause and one or more subordinate clauses.

According to their syntactical functions subordinate clauses are divided into subject, predicative, object, attributive and adverbial clauses.

  1. Say whether the following sentences are simple, compound or complex. Translate them into Ukrainian.

  1. My groupmate, who has serious problems with her adrenal glands, feels bad today and we are going to the library without her.

  2. The text on endocrine system was rather difficult but our task was to read and translate it.

  3. A tumour in the pituitary gland may produce excessive amounts of corticotrophin and stimulate the adrenals to overproduce corticosteroids.

  4. Many people who have suffered from endocrine disorders went on to live full and successful life.

  5. Controlling the production of or replacing specific hormones can treat many endocrine disorders in children and adolescents.

  6. Thyroid cancer affects more women than men and this type of cancer is more common in younger people.

  7. Seasonal affective disorder is a disorder in which too much melatonin is produced causing profound depression.

  8. She suffered from hypoglycemia, but her prognosis was rather good.

  9. Although it is no bigger than a pea, the pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain just beneath the hypothalamus, is often called the “master gland”.

  10. Androgens regulate body changes associated with sexual development, including enlargement of the penis, the growth spurt during puberty, and the appearance of other male secondary sex characteristics such as deepening of the voice, growth of facial and pubic hair, and the increase in muscle growth and strength.

Subject clauses are introduced by the conjunctions that, if, whether and by the conjunctive pronouns and adverbs who, whom, whose, what, which, where, when, how, why.
