Grammar: Verbal Nouns. Gerund


A verbal noun is a noun derived from a verb. It exhibits all of the properties of ordinary nouns and none of the properties of verbs.

A gerund, though it looks exactly like a verbal noun, has many properties of a verb and can take objects and can also be modified by an adverb.



      1. Read the sentences. State which of the underlined words are verbal nouns. Name the verbs they are formed from. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian language.

  1. When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place.

  2. A stomach tumour is growing through the stomach’s outer layer into nearby organs, such as the liver, pancreas, oesophagus, or intestine.

  3. Stomach cancer cells can spread by breaking away from the original tumour.

  4. A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of getting a disease.

  5. Most often, these symptoms are not due to cancer. Other health problems, such as an ulcer or infection, can cause the same symptoms.

  6. The doctor may refer his patient to a gastroenterologist, a doctor whose specialty is diagnosing and treating digestive problems.

  7. An endoscope has a tool for removing tissue

  8. The patient may receive an injection of dye.

  9. Sometimes staging is not complete until after surgery to remove the tumour and nearby lymph nodes.

  10. The choice of treatment depends mainly on the size and location of the tumour, the stage of disease, and your general health.
