| Grammar: Verbal Noun and Gerund
The verbal noun should not be confused with the gerund, which has the same suffix –ing.
1. The verbal noun has only a nominal character.
Needling is performed according to strict and complicated rules.
2. The verbal noun may be used with an article.
The case history writing is one of the physician’s obligatory rules.
3. The verbal noun may be used in the plural.
The human beings cannot leave without oxygen.
4. A verbal noun cannot take a direct object; it takes a prepositional object with the preposition of.
The physician started the examining of the patient with gastritis.
5. The verbal noun may be modified by an adjective.
A correct making a diagnosis can quicken the recovery.
